Jim Flora was an avant garde illustrator of the 1940s and 50s who designed many album covers, including (on the left) this one for the legendary jazz drummer, Gene Krupa. The graphic designer of my CD, CONVICTION, claimed that he was “paying tribute” to Flora when he came up with the design on the right. Unfortunately, in the first printing of CONVICTION Flora’s name was not even mentioned in the credits! My lawyer got in touch with the Jim Flora estate, and I’m happy to report that we reached an amicable agreement. People very familiar with Flora’s work take my graphic designer’s side. He says this kind of thing is done all the time, that his design was an obvious homage to Flora. I didn’t buy that. How can I talk about the evils of plagiarism and have this little skeleton in my closet? Jim Flora’s name now appears in the credits of CONVICTION.
